Stunning accommodation in a beautiful location

The accommodation was spotlessly clean, well appointed and spacious. The location is beautiful with riverside walks straight from the door and a 15 /20 min walk from Durham historical centre.
The host James is enthusiastically helpful without being intrusive.
We will return

Excellent self catering cabins near Durham

Great location, in very quiet countryside behind garden centre (so very secure after hours), but only 30 min walk from Durham centre. James couldn't do enough to help out and very responsive to any text queries out of hours.
Converted shipping containers with all facilities (brand spanking new when we went), plenty of space for a couple or family if prepared to use the sofabed in the lounge area. Well insulated, but big windows can can impact temperature - air conditioning and heating unit very effective - we had occasion to test both in changeable Spring.
Kitchen well equipped, good quality knives, pans and other implements. Tassimo coffee maker with a few pods to start you off, nice quality cutlery. Fresh milk in the fridge and 5 posies of fresh flowers through the cabin.
Comfy bed, pillows a bit soft but I always think that. Wardrobe on the small side, but adequate.
Blankets and cushions provided for sitting outside - worth it for star gazing in dark sky area.

Excellent stay

Location is great – 30 mins walk to central Durham or 5 mins to a bus stop, 10 mins drive from a large supermarket and fairly close to the A1. We overlooked a field and the banks of the River Wear. The lodges are really well equipped with thoughtful touches like fresh flowers and chilled wine in the fridge. We were very well looked after during our stay and thoroughly recommend staying here.

Overnight wedding stay

We booked all 4 lodges for the night before our daughters wedding at a nearby location so naturally we wanted somewhere nice and relaxing. We were not disappointed. The lodges were excellent, spotlessly clean and the location perfect for our needs. James, the owner, couldn't help us enough. Would definitely recommend and we intend to book again for a weekend break.

Exceptional stay with an incredible host!

I had an absolutely fantastic experience at Unbox at Poplar Tree in Shincliffe! From start to finish, James was an outstanding host—friendly, attentive, and incredibly accommodating. He made sure everything was perfect for our stay, providing clear communication and thoughtful touches that made us feel truly welcome.
The space itself is beautifully designed, spotless, and wonderfully cosy, with every little detail carefully considered to ensure maximum comfort. It’s the perfect spot for a peaceful getaway while still being close to Durham. The setting is stunning, with a lovely atmosphere that makes you feel instantly relaxed.
James went above and beyond to make our stay special, and I wouldn’t hesitate to return. If you’re looking for a unique and memorable stay with a fantastic host, Unbox at Poplar Tree is the place to go! Highly recommend.
